Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Labour Party (LP) in the February 25th election, has expressed concern that Nigeria is deviating from the fundamental principles of democracy.
In a statement posted on his official social media page to mark International Democracy Day, Obi urged Nigerians to remain committed to strengthening the nation’s democratic values.
Obi highlighted the ongoing erosion of democratic ideals in the country, citing issues such as rampant corruption, constitutional abuses, disregard for the rule of law, and transactional politics spanning the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.
He warned that if left unchecked, these trends would lead the nation further into lawlessness, moving away from the core principles of true democracy.
He emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law as a crucial intangible asset that strengthens a nation. Obi called upon all Nigerians to continue working towards building and reinforcing the country’s democratic foundations.
Despite coming third in the presidential election, Obi reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to a new and genuinely democratic Nigeria.
He expressed his vision for a Nigeria led by effective leadership, believing that such leadership would benefit every Nigerian.
He called on citizens not to lose hope, emphasizing that a new and truly democratic Nigeria is attainable.
It’s worth noting that Obi and his party had filed petitions with the tribunal challenging the electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election.
However, these petitions were dismissed by a five-man panel for lacking merit.
