President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting at the Aso Rock villa on Thursday with Abdullahi Ganduje, the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and top-ranking military officials.
The purpose of this gathering was to address the ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders in various regions of Nigeria.
According to the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), President Tinubu is expected to receive a comprehensive report and strategy from the national conference committee on livestock reforms and conflict mitigation in Nigeria.
Before concluding his second term as Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje collaborated with stakeholders to seek sustainable resolutions to these issues. In January, he established a 26-member committee, led by former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Attahiru Jega, tasked with organizing a national conference to propose solutions to farmer-herder clashes.
During the meeting, Ganduje emphasized that Jega’s committee had submitted a report containing effective remedies to the conflicts. He expressed confidence that this report could provide solutions for the livestock industry’s challenges, promote development, reduce conflicts between farmers and pastoralists, and lower the import costs of animal products such as milk and beef.
Over the years, these conflicts have resulted in loss of lives, damage to crops, and livestock casualties in various parts of the country.”
