Following the announcement of the sighting of Ramadan crescent by the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Nigeria, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, this year’s Ramadan fasting commences today, May 6 2019.

Beginning at puberty, all Muslims (with certain exceptions, such as if one is ill, traveling, pregnant, elderly, etc.) take part in the month-long sunrise-to-sunset fast that is the hallmark of Ramadan. Muslims believe that fasting cleanses the body, and the practice reminds them of the suffering of the poor.

Nigerian Muslims will join other Muslim faithfuls around the world in observing the month of fasting, abstaining from food, drinks and conjugal relationships between dawn and sunset for the entire period of the month. The observance of the yearly fast in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. As revealed in the Holy Qur’an, Almighty Allah enjoined Muslims to fast in the month of Ramadan: “O you who have believe Fasting is decreed upon you as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (2: 183).

However, the Commander-General of Kano sharia police identified as Hisbah, Nabahani Usman has stated that his men will begin to arrest adults who are seen eating in public.

Recall that Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. It is a holy month dedicated to prayer and reading the Quran. Generosity and giving to worthy causes and neighbours is encouraged. It is a period for reflection, self-restraint and warmth intended to bring Muslims closer to Allah.

Nabahani Usman made it clear that the arrested persons would only be released if they can provide an exemption letter from a medical doctor or the person can show proof of chronic ulcer.

While speaking to newsmen, Usam said that when such a person has provided evidence of a medical condition that allows him/her to eat, he or she would be released with a warning not to eat in public anymore.

Nabahani Usman said in a statement:“We do this kind of operation yearly and we will continue it this year. The aim is to get every Muslim to respect the month of Ramadan. Even if a doctor says you should not fast, that does not mean you should eat in public while others are fasting.

“So any Muslim that we apprehend eating outside, our men will arrest and bring the person to our office unless he can show proof that a doctor asked him not to fast.”
