British Border Force staff must have thought that the best way to prevent the Argentine maestro from doing his magic on the pitch was to keep him away from the turf at all.

A SURPRISING hero offered Manchester United help in stopping Barcelona's star Leo Messi in the Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

Former Red Devils player Quinton Fortune revealed a passport control officer at Manchester airport "promised" not to let the Argentine maestro into the UK.

United defender Chris Smalling has revealed his team-mates "cheered" when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men were drawn against Barcelona.

But deep down the Red Devils surely know they are facing a herculean task if they want to go past Barcelona spearheaded by the might Argentine.

Messi has been in sublime form this season, scoring 43 goals and adding 21 assists in 40 games for the Catalans.

And he almost single-handedly fired Barca up to the quarter-finals with a heroic display against Lyon.

The forward bagged a double and set two of his team-mates up to breeze past the Ligue 1 outfit with an impressive 5-1 victory.

YOU SHALL NOT PASS

And, having realised beating the Catalans won't be a cakewalk after all, a Red Devils fan came up with an unexpected solution of how to keep Messi quiet at Old Trafford.

Simply, just don't let him into the country.

Fortune, who won the Premier League title with United during his seven-year spell at the club, tweeted he had met a border control officer who joked she would stop Messi from entering the UK.

He tweeted yesterday: "Just landed back in sunny Manchester.

"The lady at passport control was very kind and promised me that she won’t let Messi in. Man Utd fans are the best."
